Overweight Hubby?
The Top 3 Reasons He Got that Way and How to Solve Them
You might be a worried wife who fears that your overweight husband will keel over from some heart disease one day. Or you might be a loving wife missing that once intimate bedroom relationship you once had. Either way, your husband gaining weight is causing serious marital troubles that both of you can’t deny. There are many reasons why people gain all that weight, and here are important questions you need to answer before you attempt to approach him about getting back into shape.
Are You Enabling Him?
As one former obese person, blogger Barbara Curtis shares that one of the many reasons she went 100 pounds overweight is the attitude of her family about her weight issues. She wondered why they “didn’t” say anything to her about it. When she lost all that extra weight, and she asked them about it, they said they just wanted to show that it was part of loving her unconditionally.
If you’re afraid of hurting your overweight husband’s feelings, don’t. Part of loving your spouse is telling him the truth. This doesn’t mean that you aren’t accepting him for who he is, just stress that you’re doing this because you don’t want to enable him anymore. You can’t just sit there and watch him ruin his health.
Solution: Have a personal heart to heart talk with your overweight husband when the mood is light. You can mention a person that you both know who has the same weight issues but has a serious life threatening disease, and tell your spouse you don’t want him to suffer the same fate.
Is Your Overweight Husband Feeling Too Stressed?
It’s not unusual for men to gain weight because of excruciating work hours, with no room time for rest, much less healthy exercise. Your overweight husband may be too much of a workaholic to notice the weight that has crept up over the years. He might get defensive about his work if you try to blame it as a sole reason for his voluntary weight gain.
Solution: If your husband feels too tired most of the time, help him relax better. Book a weekend getaway or even just a simple two hour treatment at your local spa to get him to loosen up a little. While he’s enjoying his unexpected surprise, you may put in a word or two about losing weight together because you both need it. That way, he won’t feel as threatened.
Does He Have an Eating Disorder?
While this may be a tough issue that your overweight husband can not own up to, you can observe his eating habits and ask a medical professional if you suspect something. An unhealthy family history or some important event may have negatively affected his body image and eating behavior.
Solution: Don’t be afraid to do a full on intervention when you need to. Get him the help he needs. For his sake and yours.
